Official Monster Truck "Silly Season" Thread 2013

So far tonight looks like it's Anderson royale as Adam took racing in Arlington, Ryan took racing in Jax, and Dennis took freestyle in Jax after the show was put on a delay due to rain.

I find it ironic how Tom and the Max D team has arguably had a pretty rough season compared to previous years with the 10th Anniversary while the Anderson clan is picking up wins left and right.

On PC now, time to type this up.

Arriving at around 3:30 pm, I expected short lines to get onto the track in New Orleans. To my surprise, the line for the pit party stretched around the Dome's entrance and into its parking garage. Once I was into the Pit Party, I realized just how large the turnout for the event. The Superdome was sold out, and as Morgan Kane said after climbing to the top seats in the stadium, "Every seat here is full." Those seats would not be filled for long, as the excitement and entertainment brought by Monster Jam had many fans on their feet.

Okay I give up trying to be formal, here's some interesting stuff that happened:

During the intros, Amsoil Shock Therapy shut down which brought all of the trucks behind it to a stop. The truck would not go on to qualify, race, or freestyle. The driver of Shock Therapy, Jeremy Brady, is the only one I actually met and got a picture with. I believe I may have cursed the truck.

Tom Meents brought out Maximum Destruction in a single intro in which he would attempt to do donuts in. Unfortunately, the New Orleans track proved to be too tacky as Meents rolled his truck and damaged the new Decade of Destruction body.

Jimmy Creten in Bounty Hunter qualified with his wife and laid down the fastest time of the night, Carl Van Horn also made a very good pass when he qualified with Tom Meents.

Racing was very exciting with many interesting match ups, most notably Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction in semi-finals racing. Carl Van Horn narrowly edged out Tom Meents to move onto the finals. Nicole Johnson suffered problems in round 1 racing while facing Scott Hartsock in Gunslinger. Rounding the turning cars and accelerating down the straightaway, she lost control and clipped a freestyle obstacle which sent her into a barrel roll. The Scooby Doo truck would land on its lid and smash into the car stack at the end of the SoCal style track. Nicole Johnson appeared to have some wounds on her head (redness/bruising) when she appeared on camera to talk to the Monster Jam fans. Coming down to the finals, Carl Van Horn faced Jimmy Creten in Bounty Hunter. Coming off the tabletop, CVH collided with a turning car and would not recover in the race. Jim Creten would take it easy toward the end and take the racing win in New Orleans.

After the intermission, Tom Meents drove the Maximum Destruction truck used for backflips out onto the track. The backflip truck was greeted to the cheering of 60,000+ fans and successfully completed a backflip.

Freestyle was shortened by the fact that 5 trucks would not compete: Shock Therapy, Ground Pounder, Hurricane Force, Scooby Doo, and AAP Grinder. The drivers that did compete put on an amazing show. Dawn Creten would come out first and set the pace for the rest of the field. Tim Mente would come out second and hit a unique obstacle consisting of a van, car, car stack. Unfortunately, Mente became stuck on the obstacle and had to be pulled off by a front loader. Morgan Kane, Sean Duhon, Ryan Rice, Joey Sylvester, Scott Hartsock, Rod Schmidt and Jimmy Creten would follow up all with good freestyles.

Maximum Destruction came out second to last and laid down a solid freestyle full of big air and three bicycle saves. After sticking the truck into the ground at the end of his run, Meents' truck was left on the track.

Carl Van Horn and Grave Digger came out strong and hit a bus stack which sent him flying towards Maximum Destruction. Grave Digger would land on Max-D and obliterate the right side of the 3D body, leaving it faceless. Carl Van Horn's run was full of huge air and even a reverse move on a step-up ramp. Grave Digger's run would edge out Maximum Destruction's by one point, giving CVH the win in New Orleans.

After Grave Digger's run, the second Maximum Destruction truck in attendance was brought out by Tom Meents where he delivered a solid encore for the New Orleans fans. At one point, Tom Meents aimed Max-D at the overturned Grave Digger left on the track and rammed it. Grave Digger's tubular chassis was left partially broken in the rear after the violent hit. After flipping the second Maximum Destruction, Tom Meents ended the show and it was capped off by a fireworks display.

Overall, this New Orleans show was the best I've ever seen and I hope to see it on Speed in the future. Though some trucks did not compete, I believe the performances put on by the other drivers made up for it. I give the 2013 New Orleans Monster Jam show a 9/10.

I must be the only one here that thinks Nicole has talent. She had already proven herself against Gunslinger earlier in qualifying. She just lost the truck a bit going down the straightaway. I think she is talented in monster trucks.
